The Dell Design

This sculpture is a new beginning!  The first with dual independent balance elements.  Commissioned by Mr. Dell and based on a design of the forms by him.  A challenge of his design was integrating the ballast weights to achieve balance and to contain that within the slim form of the sculpture.  A slim waist to the sculpted forms only allows a 1-in-12 ratio to get the counter balance ( so I only have 3 inches of space to balance 36 inches of leverage) and it is done without being seen!

A series of structural cavities concealed within the sculpted form allows me to secure ballast weights in various stages to get the balance.  Each time ballast is added or subtracted, half the assembly is taken apart, tested, put back together and tested again.  I probably spent twenty hours performing this repetition until an element is balanced.

I like the overlapping motion of the work, especially when lighting gives you some shadow play on the wall as the sculpture moves.
